Former Indiana University Sydney Masur has agreed a one-year-deal with Fortuna Hjørring. The Danish league leaders currently sit top of the Elitedivisionen with 36 points out of 14 games.
Fortuna Hjørring
Fortuna Hjørring is one of Denmark’s most successful and historically significant women’s soccer clubs, rooted in a rich legacy that spans over four decades. Founded in 1966, the club has consistently been a dominant force in Danish women’s soccer, boasting 11 league titles and 10 Danish cups. Known for its commitment to developing talent both locally and internationally, Fortuna Hjørring has played a key role in elevating the profile of women’s soccer in Denmark.
In Europe, Fortuna Hjørring’s success reached a historic milestone during the 2002-2003 UEFA women’s cup, the predecessor of the UEFA Women’s Champions League. Overcoming Arsenal Ladies in the semi-finals, the team eventually fell short against Swedisch side Umea IK. Their journey to the final remains a defining moment in the club’s history, further solidifying their reputation within European women’s soccer.
The current league leaders are coached by Lene Terp, a true trailblazer within Danish soccer. With over 105 international caps for the Danish national team, which she captained from 1998 to 2003, Terp has an incredible reputation within the country. Terp also is no stranger to college sports herself, having won an NAIA title in 1995 with Lynn University as well as being an assistant coach with the University of Michigan in the Big-10.
Sydney Masur
Sydney Masur’s college career has been nothing short of impressive. The midfielder from Montclair, New Jersey, made an immediate impact during her rookie season at Indiana University, earning a spot on the 2021 Big Ten All-Freshman Team. Racking up 4.500 minutes during her four year stay with the program, she has been one of the first names on the team sheet of Dutch head coach Erwin van Bennekom, who is excited about her European move:
”I had the privilege of coaching Sydney Masur for four years at the University of Indiana, and I couldn’t be more excited for her as she embarks on her professional soccer journey in Denmark. Sydney is a true professional, with a strong understanding of her qualities and the role she plays for a team. Her tactical understanding of the game, commitment, and awareness of her abilities make her an invaluable asset to any club. I have no doubt she’ll make a positive impact at her new club. Wishing her the best as she continues to excel in her career!”
