In a surprise summer move, Sara Vijfhuizen, one of the Eredivisie’s rising defensive talents, has officially signed with Elche CF Femenino, marking the next chapter in her rapidly ascending career. The Dutch center-back joins the Spanish side after completing her first full professional season with Fortuna Sittard Vrouwen.
Vijfhuizen, 24, impressed in the 2024–25 season with Fortuna Sittard, where she quickly became a mainstay in defense thanks to her composure on the ball, aerial strength, and intelligent positioning. Her performances drew attention beyond the Netherlands, with Elche CF moving quickly to secure her signature ahead of the new campaign.
“It’s a bold move, but one I’m ready for,” Vijfhuizen said in an early statement. “Spanish football is dynamic, technically sharp, and I’m excited to immerse myself in a new culture and footballing philosophy. Elche’s vision really spoke to me.”
The Dutch defender brings international experience from her time in the United States college system, as well as a season of high-level competition in the Eredivisie. She is expected to slot straight into Elche’s backline as the team pushes for promotion in Spain’s Grupo 2 de la Segunda Federación. Elche CF Femenino, currently restructuring under head coach Txema Expósito, has made clear its ambition to return to top-tier football. Vijfhuizen’s signing is a signal of intent.
